Week 11: August 10 – 16

Austin

Austin after petting a baby alligator.

My sister Karen and her three kids, Tyler, Kaliv, and Galun were visiting this week.  It was a wonderful visit filled with lots of activity as we tried to fit in as much fun as possible in our short time together.

Monday we decided to go to the Brantford Zoo.  It sounds like a reasonable thing to do but turned into a bad situation when we realized after driving for two hours and stopping for directions multiple times that our Google Map sucked ass!  We finally arrived and did manage to enjoy the day but I doubt I will ever try that trip again!  The zoo itself was great – lots of the expected animals (zebras, camels, bears, wolves, big cats, etc.) and a great interactive show where we got to pet lizards, a snake, an alligator, a baby mountain lion, and a baby tiger.   The kids got souvenirs from the gift shop on our way out and we started back home.  The return trip was MUCH easier.  We stopped on the way at the Cambridge Center mall for food and shopping.  Karen got a couple of great tops at Reitman’s and Jacob and some cool jewelry at Ardene.

Tuesday was a totally different set of experiences.  Jeff had to work so we were down one participant.  We went to the Farmer’s Market in St. Jacobs, visited the outlet mall where Kaliv and Galun spent all their time building Lego cars and racing them in the Lego factory.  Karen and Tyler found some shoes at Tender Tootsies.  We stopped at the Wal-Mart on our way back to Waterloo and grabbed lunch at McDonalds before picking up a few things.  I had to take Austin to a developmental assessment at Social Services so Karen, Tyler, Kaliv and Galun explored the Waterloo uptown area.  We all went to the Blood Donor clinic where I donated blood.  Karen took the baby shopping at the Dollar Store and Fashion Max while I was tied up.  Karen got a beautiful grey suit, and five shirts.  She called an end to all her shopping then and there.

Wednesday was Austin’s 10 month anniversary!  It was another work day for Jeff and the kids were tired of all the running around so we stayed close to home for the morning only venturing out in the afternoon for a quick trip to Costco to pick up pictures and a couple of things for the kids for “back to school”.  Galun got shorts and a couple of hooded long sleeve t-shirts.  Kaliv and Tyler each got a pair of pants.  We had a quiet evening at home playing Guitar Hero in the basement.

Thursday was an all day trip to Niagara Falls.  We visited Marineland where we watched a show with dolphins, seals, a sea lion, and a walrus.  We saw a separate show with Killer Whales.  We pet and fed the Beluga Whales.  We tried one of the rides – the swings.  We finished up with a trip to the gift shop on our way out.  We then visited with Nan (Jeff’s grandmother) showing off Austin to the neighbors and other family members.  We took Nan and Janice out to dinner at Falls Manor for broasted chicken.  On our way out of town, we stopped at Table Rock so the kids could visit Niagara Falls before the drive home.  It was a wonderful day.

Friday was a sad day as this was the day everyone left for Ottawa.  Karen and her family are meeting up with my other sister Holly and her family in Ottawa today.  They are driving back to PEI tomorrow.  We will miss them very much!

Saturday I had to travel to London for emergency eye surgery.  All went well but there were no beds in the hospital so Jeff and I returned home for a short sleep before…

…returning for a follow-up exam on Sunday!  My surgery was very successful.  I may have to wear glasses again as it is likely that I will be nearsighted in my right eye.  The surgery to correct the detached retina actually changes the shape of the back of my eye.  We’ll know more once my healing is complete in a couple of weeks.

This week Austin is crawling and pulling himself up on furniture and people.  He is babbling using many more sounds than last week.  He is pointing now although not necessarily at anything specifically.  Our little boy continues to grow and change.  He is missing the excitement of having his older cousins around.  They inspired him to try new things.  He was a real trouper when we had to leave him with neighbors as we dealt with my eye issues.  What a perfect little boy!

Playing tourist in Florida

We just returned after spending a week driving around Florida with Mom & Dad. We shopped, listened to some local jazz, and hit the Clearwater Sea Blues Festival. The weather wasn’t great, but it was certainly warmer than back home!

Boston Trip

Sandy and I haven’t taken much time off work this year, and thought that it might be nice to get away for a weekend. Sandy loves Boston – she’s spent a lot of time there with work – so we thought it might be a lot of fun to play tourist there for a bit. We took a long weekend, flew out, and had a blast!

Saturday: Flew out Saturday morning, and checked into the Lenox Hotel, a new boutique hotel in the entertainment district. We had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, went on a Boston Duck Tour, shopped a little, had dinner at an upscale restaurant, then went to see Blue Man Group.

Sunday: We spent the day playing tourist. We started with a tour at the John Hancock tower, then walked to Boston Common and followed the Freedom Trail. It was pouring rain, so we stopped at a pub, had dinner, and watched a football game (nothing like watching a New England game in a bar in Boston!) Later that night, we listened to live Jazz in the Signature Lounge, on the 96th floor of the John Hancock building, with an amazing view of the city.

Monday: Boston has amazing museums and architecture; it’s the home of Harvard, MIT and other attractions. We had breakfast and walked through the Boston Public Library, before heading up to MIT and having a walk around campus. Finally, we checked out of our hotel, and flew home Monday night.

Girl’s Weekend Away – NOTL

I’m just back from a Girl’s weekend at Niagara on the Lake.  I take tap dancing lessons with a group of women who are extraordinary in every way.  We planned a weekend getaway in June and finally had the chance to enjoy our preparations.  I’ve never laughed so much!  The combination of food (mostly chocolate), booze (mostly martinis) and a Karaoke machine just can’t be beat.

We rented a beautiful place:  Andrew Logan House.  We had four bedrooms, each of which had an attached bathroom – absolutely necessary in a place with six women.  The kitchen, eating and sitting rooms were large and accommodated all of us easily.   We were across the street from a couple of cemeteries – perfect for evening walks.  From the large windows on the second and top levels of the house we could just barely view the lake.  It was a great place in a great location.

We walked downtown for some shopping.  Lots of really unique stores for Christmas gifts and additions to our own wish lists.  Need I mention the hat store?  We spent hours and hours browsing but eventually left with nothing.  I’m allergic to wool – saddest allergy ever.

We spent Saturday at a wine tour – Joseph’s.  The wine was okay – some interesting wines but nothing that classifies as a “fat” red or an outstanding white.  The rose was quite nice and the tour itself was fantastic.

After leaving NOTL, we continued to Niagara Falls where we took the trolley across the gorge and then visited a glass blowing shop on our way to The Falls themselves.  What a nice way to end an already fantastic trip.  We must do it again next year.

Millcroft Inn

We just got back from a fantastic (and very quick!) trip to the Millcroft Inn, a country inn and spa near Orangeville. We spent Saturday browsing around Orangeville, and went on a train tour through the countryside for a few hours. Saturday evening through Monday morning we spent at the Millcroft Inn, getting pampered with spa treatments (massage, pedicures), taking walks along the water, and eating at an amazing restaurant. It’s been a busy summer, and we really needed to get away for a while!

All of the photos are here, and I’ve attached a few teasers below.

Montreal Jazz Festival Photos

Ah, I love Montreal! The people were wonderful, the food outstanding, and the jazz… let’s just say it was worth standing in the rain risking a cold to hear it!

We have the best friends in the world!

We just returned from a weekend at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Our friends Mike and Denise surprised us with tickets to see “Return to Forever” (Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola, and Lenny White). We drove up on Friday, stayed at the Best Western Europea, and returned on Sunday. It was awesome! The concert was incredible, the hotel was walking distance to the festival and the tour through Old Montreal was just wonderful. We visited Notre-Dame Basilica. What a beautiful church! I would highly recommend a trip to Montreal for everyone. If only you had friends as nice as we do – sigh.

Bobcaygeon Trip

This is our second year of what’s turning into a family tradition: meeting Mom & Dad, Nan & Pop for a few days in Bobcaygeon each spring to go fishing. Our family is spread around the country, so we don’t get together as often as we would like, and events like this are really important. I might never be a great fisherman, but the time spent with family means a lot to us.

Of course, it rained all week, and we didn’t catch much, but in the end, nobody minded.

Now I just need to remember to actually take photos from time to time. Oh well, here’s a few, including Sandy’s first trip out in the boat!
